About Irish Life

Irish Life is the largest pensions and life assurance provider in the country by a significant margin, with over €110bn in assets under management. Owned by Canadian holding company Great-West Lifeco since 2013, it offers the broadest range of pension and PRSA products on the Irish market, including the well-known MAPS (Multi-Asset Portfolio) range, the Empower PRSA, and a series of passive indexed funds at some of the lowest charges available.

Strengths

  • Scale: the largest fund complex in the Irish market means competitive charges on passive funds, with the Indexed World Equity fund at 0.50% AMC.
  • Product breadth: PRSA, personal pension, company pension, ARF and annuity — all available from a single provider.
  • ILIM (Irish Life Investment Managers) runs large chunks of the asset management in-house rather than outsourcing.

Watch-outs

  • Active multi-asset funds (MAPS range) charge 1.00% AMC — fair but not cheap by international standards.
  • Default lifecycling strategies can de-risk earlier than some savers would choose; always check the glidepath.
